Around this time one year ago, I was posting daily Instagram stories of açaí bowls, garlic shrimp, and lilikoi cheesecake from Hawaii. It was about that time, right after I’d finished an intensive full-time coding bootcamp (that left me with little time for things like fitness), when I realized I wasn’t in the best shape of my life. But then Hawaii happened, and then family reunion in Las Vegas happened, and then Seattle, Vancouver, Whistler, Park City, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and a 3-week trip to Japan happened. So, basically, it only got worse, and now here we are an entire year later.
It was right when these trips finally started slowing down (and right when COVID was beginning) that I heard about this book. It’s called Always Eat After 7 PM: The Revolutionary Rule-Breaking Diet That Lets You Enjoy Huge Dinners, Desserts, and Indulgent Snacks—While Burning Fat Overnight by Joel Marion , an inspiring guy in many ways, one of them being physically. The title is what intrigued me because I knew right away it was going to suit me. I’m a total night owl, I love munching right before bed, and I absolutely cannot fall asleep if I’m feeling hungry, so if someone tells me it’s okay to eat after 7PM or it’s okay to skip breakfast, and you can still reach your goals doing so, they’ve caught my interest.
I ripped through the book in 3 days. I’ve always relied on exercise to keep me in fair shape, so I’ve never seriously dieted in my life, but the ideas within this book were so simple and sensible, backed up with all kinds of research, that my motivation was through the roof when I finished reading. For example, check this out:
“Late-night eating also curbs calorie intake the next day. In a four-week study, dieters added a snack to their daily regimen 90 minutes after dinner every night, and check this out: late-night eaters ate an average of 397 fewer calories per day.”
It feels great to let go of guilt over my late-night snacking habits.
The book debunks myths about late-night eating, offers studies on why late-night eating is actually beneficial in many ways, and then assembles all of that research into a perfectly organized diet plan, with general guidelines for the more flexible dieters, and exact meals plans with recipes for the more stringent dieters. The plan essentially consists of: The 14-day Acceleration Phase to kick-start the program and see rapid results, The Main Phase where you’ll learn exactly which foods to eat when in order to achieve your weight-loss goals, and The Lifestyle Phase to keep the weight off for good. It’s an easy-to-follow diet that accelerates fat-burning and allows you to indulge in your most intense food cravings: Eating the majority of your calories at night. Which is right up my alley.
I really enjoyed the book. I’ve been implementing the principles set forth in it and will post more updates about my journey over the next couple months. I absolutely recommend this as both a great read and a great tool. You can learn more about the book and how to purchase HERE.
